New Zealand – ‘Land of the Long White Cloud’ – is an amazing destination. It may be small, but it offers diverse culture, spectacular scenery, is known as the world’s ‘adventure playground’ and has so much to see and do, you need to spend at least two weeks in this fantastic country to even scratch the surface of what is on offer, on both islands.
Auckland is known as the ‘City of Sails’ and is a great city. The Sky Tower overlooks the city (you can see for 80km’s in each direction!) and is home to a number of exciting activities including the Sky Walk and Sky Jump if you are feeling brave. The Viaduct Harbour area is fabulous – modern with breathtaking views, trendy restaurants and vibrant nightlife, as well as a couple of terrific hotels which make great bases to stay. Kelly Tarlton’s Antarctic Encounter is a must, and consider a day out on the harbour on the America’s Cup Yacht Experience. A day trip to Waiheke Island is another ‘must do’ whilst in Auckland.
Two and a half hours north of Auckland is the Bay of Islands, one of the most beautiful places of New Zealand, and somewhere that never disappoints its visitors.
South of Auckland is Rotorua, where you will experience Maori culture at its best and visit the incredible mud pools and volcanic areas of Hells Gates. Take in a Cultural Maori Village experience where you can also enjoy a Haka demonstration and scrumptious Maori Hangi feast, it’s a great night out!
Waitomo Caves is another highlight of the North Island – blackwater rafting (its ‘soft adventure’ so suitable for all!) through the glowworm caves is a unique experience and something I’ve never forgotten.
Then there’s Lake Taupo where you can jetboat at the nearby Huka Falls, go trout fishing or play golf.
Drive through the southern wine country and taste crisp sauvignon blancs and sample excellent pinot noirs! Close by is the art deco city of Napier, where it is great to take a walking tour through the city and take in the amazing architecture.
So much to do on the North Island…. And something to suit all ages and tastes. Whether you’re into adventure (jet boating, bungy jumping, zorbing etc), or want to relax and enjoy Health Retreats and Spas (hot springs and mud pools!), golf, fishing or enjoy a gourmet culinary and wine experience, it’s all there to be enjoyed. There are also great ski resorts on the north island, as well as whale watching, seal and penguin encounter opportunities and a host of other activities to try.
A great way to enjoy New Zealand is to hire a Motorhome and tour wherever you please, it’s a popular way to explore New Zealand and there are Motorhomes aplenty on the roads. Or you can do hotel/motel stays and car hire touring – open dated accommodation vouchers make touring a breeze. And coach touring is also popular if you’d rather be taken care of.
So take a trip to New Zealand, you’ll be amazed at how much there is to see and do. And if you want to explore outside of Ski season when the weather is at its best, October to February is an ideal time to visit!
