Many of my clients are heading off to ‘the snow’ over the next couple of weeks – mainly to the popular destinations of Thredbo (NSW), Falls Creek (VIC) and Queenstown (NZ) – to get their winter ski ‘fix’, and it reminds me of my first ski trip which was in August last year.
I think I’ve already mentioned that my childhood was spent in the UK, but even though I was more than well acquainted with snow, ice and freezing cold, I had never been fortunate enough to go skiing, so I was very excited to finally have an attempt and the opportunity.
We flew into Canberra, picked up a car and made the 2 ½ hour drive to Thredbo, through beautiful countryside and National Park. It was night time when we arrived and I was instantly struck by how beautiful and quaint Thredbo was – we could have been in any European ski destination, amidst chalet style accommodation set around a ‘cute’ village square, and in the heart of spectacular mountains.
The following morning we hit Friday Flats, quite uncertain as to what was involved but ready to take on the challenge. The process of organising ski lessons, lift tickets and ski hire was a mass production – organised and streamlined, and also so efficient. We booked in for beginner’s lessons and headed for the slopes.
We only had two full days in Thredbo, but had an amazing couple of days and had ‘mastered’ Friday Flats by the time we left. The kid’s program was fantastic and we all loved the whole experience – we were certainly proud of ourselves to have been able to ski down Friday Flats and arrive at the bottom in one piece (they certainly teach you quickly!)
Of course, Thredbo is definitely not just for Beginner’s. We travelled to Thredbo with others who were very experienced skiers and took the chair life to the top of the mountain on our second day, to enjoy lunch and check out where the ‘real’ skiers hung out. It was amazing to see and I can understand the adrenalin rush and why people become avid and addicted skiers. The whole atmosphere was fantastic, in the restaurant on the mountain and also throughout the whole ski village. Think mulled wine, hot chocolate, warm chili and cozy fireplaces…ummm.
So give it a try! Our next ski adventure will be Falls Creek or Queenstown, but for the experienced – Japan and Canada are definitely ‘flavor of the month’ – time to start booking if you haven’t already!
All lifts are now open at Thredbo and Falls Creek as of today…. going to be a huge skiing weekend!!!
